The 300Sc
Offered in coupe, cabriolet, and roadster models, the 300 Sc stands as the most decadently outfitted Mercedes-Benz to have been offered by the company since production resumed following WWII. The glamorous motorcar recalled the Teutonic grandeur of the illustrious 540 K. The 300 Sc, with its opulent chrome, leather, wood, and “Einspritzmotor ” emblazoned on the rear bumper, came to market as a completely hand-built, attention-demanding flagship. Twice as costly as the newly introduced 300 SL, it was the height of exclusivity.

This car:
This sublimely restored example has been treated to a no-expense-spared thorough restoration, both mechanically and cosmetically, with breathtaking results. It is certainly one of the finest examples in existence.
The 53 hand-built 300 Sc Roadsters represent a departure from Mercedes-Benz tradition. Without landau irons, and unencumbered by a thick headliner and its requisite padding, the height of the folded top barely rises above the body line, lending a sporty, youthful flair to the car. The top tucks neatly into its well without the exaggerated traditional stack height of most German convertibles.
The former owner of this magnificent Sc, a noted authority on early postwar Mercedes-Benz, purchased the car in 2005, disassembled but complete, from well-known Mercedes-Benz club member Lynn Yakel, who had owned it since 1972. A known example within the club, it was remarkably sound when the decision was made to give the Sc a concours-Ievel restoration. The body and chrome, as well as the differential and brakes, were restored by the highly respected Rudi && Co. of Vancouver Island, BC. Renowned expert Walter Quitt, who has rebuilt dozens of 300 Sc drivelines, overhauled the engine and transmission.
The trunk of this handsome Sc is outfitted with dual spare wheels and fitted with 300 Sc Roadster-only luggage that matches its beautiful crimson leather. Ken Nemanic, who has trimmed no fewer than seven Pebble Beach Best of Show-winning entries, upholstered the interior and restored the folding top using the proper plastic rear window with the factory-correct markings.
The restoration was completed in late 2008, in time for the Sc to make its debut at the Mercedes- Benz Starfest, held in San Francisco that year. The car was awarded Best in Show at that event and has since competed at the Palo Alto, Hillsborough, and Marin-Sonoma concours, taking Best in Class honors each time. In June 2010, this gleaming Roadster was again shown at Palo Alto where it received the Meguiar ‘s Best Exterior Finish Award.
Acquired in January 2011 by the consignor, a noted California collector, the 300 Sc Roadster has since seen regular, yet sparing, use and has been thoroughly maintained and tuned by some of Southern California ‘s best regarded Mercedes-Benz mechanics.
Seven times rarer than a Gullwing, the difficulty and complexity of completing a restoration on a 300 Sc to concours level cannot be overstated. Parts are far scarcer than those for the 300 SL and the number of chrome pieces to attend to is simply staggering. Each piece must be expertly straightened, prepared, finished, installed, and aligned properly; and one can quickly imagine how restoration costs on a Sc routinely run several hundred thousand dollars. Here is a unique opportunity to own a fully optioned, expertly restored example in outstanding colors with a proven concours record. Having seen minimal use since completion, it has never placed lower than first.
The surviving examples of the Sc remain as elegant and exclusive today as when they were first built. This 300 Sc Roadster is set to provide its next owner with the incomparable open-top touring and prestige for which the model was created.
